Between and , Will and Ariel Durant published a series of volumes that together were known as “The Story of Civilization.” They basically told human history (mostly Western history Author: Seattle Times Staff. the big-game reserve of public opinion. In my recent book The American Civilizing Process (Mennell ), I set out to see how far Norbert Elias’s theory of civilising and decivilising pro-cesses needed to be modified in the light of American history and how far it applied unchanged to the development of the usa. Human history is not an uninterrupted line towards progress. Alongside the line of ascent, there is a line of descent. There have been periods in history when, for different reasons, society has been thrown back, progress interrupted, and civilisation and culture undermined.   The term ‘Fake News’ has only recently entered common parlance, but it has a long history. Lies masquerading as news are as old as news itself, with royalty, governments, public figures and the mainstream media purveying it to manipulate public opinion. In an Orwellian twist those very same groups now employ it as a pejorative.
